Websites for learning English

I must admit, that learning from school is important - you learn the grammar, teachers are there to help you if you have any troubles - but the best way to really learn language is to use it during your free time and things that you are interested in.
I am really fond of music, especially indipendent rock, britpop etc. So when I was looking for some new genres and bands to explore I found CBC3 - it is a Canadienne radio, that is accesable online and you can manage your own music. It was really interesting to learn how Canadiennes talk and learn something about their music.
If you are not looking only for music, you should try BBC . In addition to music, there is plenty of channels that you can choose and listen some interesting debates, learn something about new books or listen to some experts talking about current affairs.
If you are not actually a very good at English yet, and you need to brush up you language and grammar skills I recommend you  helpforenglish It is a Czech websites, but it is one of the best choices if you are studying grammar school for example, and you are preparing for entrance exams. You can choose your own language level and test yourself or learn something more about grammar.

The Brittish National Corpus

The BNC is a corpus - a collection of samples of real life language, chosen to be as varied as possible in its coverage. It includes speech as well as a wide variety of different kinds of written language, all chosen from the same time - this is the official definition that I found in the FAQ. And I decided to put it here because it is really the best definition. The BNC can be very useful if you are student of English, who does not have a chance to spend time in England, but wants to know how is the real English in everyday usage. You find there all type of English texts and even some spoken parts. I really admire the huge amount of work and effort that was put to the BNC - about 100 million words is there to study and read.
I am really looking forward to the opportunity to study the websites more and use it during my studies, because I tried to search it now and I am still not very sure how to use, so it takes some time to understood it fully, but I am sure that it worths the effort.

Dictionaries

My favourite online dictionary is probably the Oxford learners dictionary.
I consider it very trustful source and very helpful in my studies. You find there everything you need - pronunciation, word origin, samples and idioms. I consider it very synoptical and easy to use. I also used to have a programme in my computer. This programme included some English crossword, games etc. that I was using a lot when I taught English some younger pupils.

Other interesting site is Thesaurus. Everybody who writes some longer texts in English, or writes more frequently, tends to repeat himself - at least when you are not very experienced writer. This site is very helpful for everybody who wants to find some new possibilies and broaden vocabulary list.

I was also always a bit interested in etymology of the words. If you also have similar hobby, then you should visit worldwidewords. The author explains a lot of interesting word phrases and you bet that you do not know most of them.

Netiquette

The internet happened to be our natural environment, a place of our everyday presence and sometimes a place, where we meet with other people more than we meet "face to face". That is why we have to follow some rules, not only connected to our computer - hardware and software - but some moral and practicle rules of our behaviour. We should keep in mind, that although we are often anonymous and we can write whatever we want without being mocked, we should be polite in conversations, because a lot of people can actually read what you write and it can have a bad impact on them.
Then we must follow some rules about our work and communication via emails. We must realize that paper letters are slowly disappearing, so when we are sending emails to our bosses or official requests for work, we should not forget that it is considered to be official, so we have to keep formal requests fot this type of thing and do not send some inappropriate message.
So the message is: treat people on the internet as well as in face to face conversation, do not be lazy to find out how you should write email, and do not hesitate to help newbies like your parents or grandparents.
