The BNC is a corpus - a collection of samples of real life
language, chosen to be as varied as possible in its
coverage. It includes speech as well as a wide variety of
different kinds of written language, all chosen from the same
time - this is the official definition that I found in the FAQ. And I decided to put it here because it is really the best definition. The BNC can be very useful if you are student of English, who does not have a chance to spend time in England, but wants to know how is the real English in everyday usage. You find there all type of English texts and even some spoken parts. I really admire the huge amount of work and effort that was put to the BNC - about 100 million words is there to study and read.
I am really looking forward to the opportunity to study the websites more and use it during my studies, because I tried to search it now and I am still not very sure how to use, so it takes some time to understood it fully, but I am sure that it worths the effort.
